Reds Record Remarkable win to surge into play-offs

Longridge came out winners in a massive crunch match at the top of the table.

In what originally seemed like a game of two halves, Town managed to grind out a massive three points that helped then return to the top five.

There was one change to the team from Saturday's win, as Jordan Dainty made his return to the midfield and Liam Atkinson returned to the side albeit on the bench, temporarily.

Bar a couple of hairy moments, it's hard to say that Town didn't dominate in the first half.

The hosts had the game's first effort, with Caleb Jones lifting a free kick just over the bar from 20 yards.

However after this, Town took control.

Ashcroft's young men began to play that smooth and tidy possession football with AFC unable to get a sniff.

Following some unbelievable build-up play, Jordan Dainty broke the deadlock against his former side.

Van Wyk won it back high up the field before seeking out Anderton on the right wing.

Anderton took it in his stride before dragging back past two AFC defenders and laying off Leighton Hewitt.

The youngster slid it across the six yard box to find Dainty who made no mistake from close range.

For the next ten minutes Town were electric.

However, the only opportunity fashioned during this time came through McLean, as the left back dashed past a defender before seeing his effort deflect wide for a corner.

The 'keeper managed to catch the delivery from the resulting set piece by Harvey Roberts.

Caleb Jones managed to get an effort off for AFC as the winger drifted inside before curling it wide of the far post.

Town then won another corner.

It was played short by Roberts to McLean who surged past his man and almost found Van Wyk in the middle but McGovern did well to pounce on it before it reached the forward.

The Ridge then had the ball in the net for a second time through Van Wyk.

Richmond held up Anderton's cross well in the are before setting Dainty who saw his effort parried into the path of Van Wyk.

Unfortunately, as the striker scored, the flag simultaneously went up on the far side.

Town then pulled off one of their best moves of the season, and will have been gutted not to see it ripple the net.

Richmond, Van Wyk, Dainty and Anderton combined brilliantly before Jack rifled a shot just over the bar.

The half time whistle blew just moments later following no injury time.

The rapid and fast paced nature of the game was about to disappear, as the second 45 got off to a scrappy start.

The Little Reds equalised just before the hour mark, as a corner delivery deflected into the path of Adam Sudworth, and the AFC skipper placed it perfectly past the crowd of bodies to level the scoring.

AFC then had the better of the game up until the final 20 or so minutes, limiting Longridge to a single chance as Roberts' effort from distance was gathered by McGovern.

Five substitutions later and AFC were still in control.

Town were let off as a corner fell to Moorcroft whose effort flew just over the bar from close range.

However, with 15 minutes left to play, it seems Town had weathered the storm enough, and retook the lead against the run of play.

Hewitt managed to get another cross in, this time to Roberts who squeezed it in at the near post to the delight of the Longridge faithful.

AFC somehow didn't level again moments later.

Jones latched onto a loose ball just outside the area and smashed it goalwards.

It struck the top of the crossbar and bounced over.

Town looked to be grinding out a miracle result in the second half.

However, just like the second, Town scored out of nowhere.

The Ridge broke onto a ball from Dominic Richmond, picking out fellow substitute Liam Atkinson who fired it past the 'keeper and into the top corner.

Understandably, this stung AFC a bit.

Somehow, Town could've had three or four.

Jack Banks saw a deflected effort from 20 yards cannon back off the crossbar, before Wane dragged an effort wide from a tight angle after running in behind.

Following five minutes of additional time, the referee blew the full time whistle.

Such an incredible result in difficult second half circumstances shows the brilliant mentality and work ethic of this incredible young group of players.

It was brilliant to see the lads applauded off in such a manner once again.

The Ridge flew up to 4th in the league, just three points off top of the table Ramsbottom United.

Longridge now face three consecutive away games in Litherland, Squires Gate and newly promoted Abbey Hey.

We then return home to face Holker Old Boys in the first round of the Macron Cup on Tuesday 1st October.

Following this, we host Bury FC with the Shakers yet to lose a game yet.
