Having fallen at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, this is the only national competition Town are left in so they are sure to be looking at making the most of it and progressing past their Yorkshire rivals.
A turn around in form will be required for 'The Ridge' having lost their last 3 games. With an improved performance on Tuesday, Town would be deemed unfortunate to have taken nothing from the game, however their were at least positives to be taken. An almost identical squad will travel over the roses border for this one with Town looking to replicate a couple of good runs in the competition from previous years.
Our opponents however will also require an up turn in form to win this one as they are so far winless in their opening 6 games in all competitions. Having said that they did hold fellow NWCFL Premier Division side, Charnock Richard, to a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup only to be defeated 2-0 in a replay at Mossie Park. The poor start made by the club on the pitch may have been predictable to many with off field issues having marred the summer. Dropping into the NCEL due to failure to meet ground grading meant the clubs finances were pulled, and upheaval occurred amongst the coaches and players. Just this week however a new manager has been appointed at 'Ammers' so it could well be that Town face a very different proposition this weekend to what may have been expected initially.
Manager Lee Ashcroft had the following to say ahead of the game: "We're looking forward to it of course. I think a break from the league for a knockout cup game will do us good, especially if we get the result and performance were searching for. It feels like we've been very inconsistent so far this season and having started well against Congleton, we haven't managed to match that performance level in the games since. Tuesday was more positive and I think we were unfortunate not to come away with all three points never mind none! It just feels at the moment like a win would make such a difference around the place, especially when we have such a young squad, you don't want them getting their heads down as results are going against us, so it's tough for them but they're learning and we'll only get better."
When asked if he has any knowledge of tomorrows opponents, Ashcroft added: "We know a little bit about them we think. They're a young side, similar to us who are going to want to play football so that promises a good game and we're always confident if someone wants to play us at our own game. We've had them watched when they played Charnock and by all accounts they were far from disgraced. I'm told there's a couple of good lads in their line up we need to be aware of so hopefully our homework is correct and helps us out."
For anyone wishing to follow the lads this weekend, the postcode for Southerns Stadium is LS7 4JG. Otherwise updates will be available via Twitter.
Up The Ridge!
