Bury were too good for Town as the Shakers ran out clear winners to extended their unbeaten league run, which now stands at 22.
The Ridge's promising start soon vanished after the hosts took the lead in the 12th minute and never looked back.
There was one change to the side that suffered defeat to Glossop North End, as Jack Anderton came in for Ibrahim Keita.
Atkinson fired over the bar from a somewhat tight angle after receiving it in the area.
Liam Atkinson then raced down the right and looked to pull it back for Anderton but Earl intervened and cleared.
The first sign of danger then came through Bury midfielder Cameron Fogerty had space for a shot, but opted to go on the outside and float a cross in.
However it sailed over the bar as it bent towards goal.
Jack Anderton almost found Atkinson on the counter attack but his cross was just over the striker's head.
The hosts then broke again as Cherera's effort was palmed away from goal by James Rogerson.
However, Rogerson was left helpless after a Bebeto Gomes cross was turned into the Longridge goal by Connor Newton.
The Shakers continued to pill on the pressure after the goal as Connor Pye shot wide via a deflection.
Rogerson caught the cross and looked to kick start a counter attack but Bury put a stop to that right away.
Gomes was dangerous again down that side as his cross was just over the head of the advancing Cherera.
Atkinson's pressure on Earl forced the defender to concede a corner.
Joe Adams' deliver was then headed out by Ben Hockenhull.
Adams then almost equalised spectacularly, as he played a one-two with Leighton Hewitt, nut-megged a defender and fired onto the roof of the net from 20 yards out.
That was as close as the Ridge got in the first half, as the rest of it was all Bury.
Almost immediately after, Bury punished Town.
Lewis Earl nodded a second past Rogerson from a corner.
The hosts then took charge as Rustam Stepans beat the offside trap and slotted into the bottom corner.
Djavan Pedro the waltsed through the Town defence after the hosts won it back and fired into the back of the net to make it four.
Gomes then added a fifth, as Town couldn't clear their lines again and the wing back rifled it past the helpless Rogerson.
Jack Anderton then let off some steam by earning a yellow card for a late tackle on Pye.
After four added minutes, Town were relieved to hear the half time whistle.
At the break, Ashcroft made a triple change, with Jacob Bridges, Lewis Richmond and Jefferson Goncalves replacing Luke Smith, Jordan Dainty and Joe Adams.
It took Bury just 15 minutes to add another, Pedro had an easy tap in after a square ball from Stepans.
Stepans then looked for another goal of his own straight after, but Rogerson denied him at the near post.
Malick Tanou and Ben Trafford then replaced Ryan McLean and Connor Newton.
Trafford then took the captain's armband.
Pedro then twisted and turned past Trafford before putting it on a plate for Cherera, who rifled it way over the bar.
However, Cherea would get his goal with just over ten minutes left to play as the winger fired it at the near post after receiving it on the half turn.
The hosts also hit the bar with five minutes left to play.
Reuben Jerome came close but fired wide from the edge of the box.
However, he soon made up and placed an effort into the near post to add an 8th.
Some time later, the full time whistle was blown.
The hosts stayed 2nd but extended their unbeaten league run.
We lick our wounds and go again on Tuesday 19th November when we host Padiham in the second round of the Macron Cup.
A massive thank you to those who followed us to Gigg Lane and proudly backed the boys.
