Match report: Cheadle 3-1 Longridge

Connor Philipson23 Nov - 17:00

Town falter in tough conditions

Longridge suffered another frustrating defeat, this time away at Cheadle.

Town took the lead through Atkinson's 16th goal of the season in difficult conditions but couldn't hold on.

There were four changes from the defeat to Bury as Jacob Bridges, Lewis Richmond, Malick Diakite Tanou and Papis Touray came into the XI.

Both sides struggled to get playing in the opening stages, with the less than ideal conditions playing a part.

However Town carved out the majority of the first half in their favour.

Following a fairly timid start, Liam Atkinson opened the scoring.

Jack Anderton picked out Touray superbly down the right before the Bury loanee crossed it into Atkinson whose header deflected in off the post.

Town then came close again moments later as Richmond won a great flick on to Atkinson who held it up before fizzing it out wide to Tanou.

The winger brought it onto his left before shooting and seeing it palmed away from goal by Hodges.

Then a moment of chaos.

Cheadle's Sean Moscrop seemingly elbowed Lewis Richmond.

The referee deemed it a yellow card offence.

Town captain Ryan McLean was then also carded for attempting to speak to the referee.

Moments later Richmond would receive a booking of his own for a late tackle.

The hosts came close just before the half hour mark as Matthew Cook fired it over as the ball dropped to him from close range.

Connor Newton made a brilliant defensive tackle just before the break and Town countered.

Hewitt raced down the line and played it into Touray.

The winger turned and fired at goal, it deflected off Atkinson and rolled just inches wide.

We then entered 2 minutes of added time.

As we approached the fourth added minute, Adam Davies nodded past Rogerson to equalise.

After no changes for either side at the break, we got back underway.

Cook was booked for pulling back Tanou early on.

Hewitt made another run down the right before firing across goal but he couldn't find a blue shirt.

The hosts then completed the turn-around.

The ball looked to bounce out of play but Parkinson pulled it back across goal for Davies who grabbed his and Cheadle's second.

Anderton was then booked and sin-binned for contesting the decision.

Parkinson was then involved again for Cheadle, however this time he was booked for diving under the challenge of Newton.

Malick Diakite Tanou was the next to be booked moments later for a heavy tackle.

Ashcroft then took to the bench, replacing Leighton Hewitt, Jack Anderton and Lewis Richmond with Ethan Edmunson, Luke Smith and Jordan Dainty.

The next yellow card was banished to Town manager Lee Ashcroft for dissent.

Smith started to make himself a nuisance down the left as he twisted and turned past his man before crossing into the box.

Hampton cleared for Cheadle.

The hosts almost had a third earlier, but saw a goal disallowed as Rodriguez strayed into an offside position in the build-up.

Connor Newton was then carded for a foul on half-way.

New boys Jordao Da Costa and Basit Yusuff then replaced Ryan McLean and Malick Diakite Tanou with Mitch Marshall taking the armband for the first time.

Smith won a corner and then delivered it.

Unfortunately the hosts managed to clear again.

The Ridge came close in additional time.

With 5 minutes added onto the end of the game, the hosts suffered a defensive mix-up.

It fell to Atkinson with his back to goal. He spun and hit it but it flew wide.

The hosts then came forward through the goal kick.

The substitutes combined as Connor Martin got the better of Newton and sent George Lewis on his way.

He raced in on goal and planted it into the back of the net, settling proceedings.

Another frustrating result to take back to PR3 but we now have three consecutive home matches to make things right.

They come in the form of Barnoldswick on the 30th of November, Padiham on the 3rd of December and Stockport Town on the 7th of December.

A huge thanks to those who travelled down today in the rough weather.

We go again, always keeping the faith.
