Glossop grab late late leveller

Longridge missed another chance to win, as nine man Glossop snatched a late equaliser to earn a point.

A goal either side of half time had Longridge infront, having overturned a goal deficit.

However, the hosts banded together to grab a late point in a scrappy and fierey encounter that also saw Town have a man sent off.

There were three changes from the side that were beaten by Bury, with Lewis Richmond, Lucas Wane and Matt Van Wyk coming into the starting XI.

The first effort came through Richmond, as the midfielder belted it towards goal from 20 yards which a few thought struck a Glossop arm when blocked, but nothing was given.

Liam Atkinson then got stuck in for the first time as he won it back then pulled it back for Jefferson Goncalves whose first time effort deflected wide for Town's first corner.

Harvey Roberts delivered but the hosts cleared.

Then, against the run of play, Glossop drew first blood.

Glossop's McMahon ran onto a ball down the right before pulling it across goal for Tom Lawless who stroked it past Walker.

Down but not out, Town pressed on for an equaliser.

Matt Van Wyk was seemingly brought down in the area during a tangle of legs but nothing was given.

Our penalty record recently however is an unwanted one.

Atkinson found himself in on goal moments later, being consistently pulled back in the process, but he found some space to get a shot away.

However, Bayleigh Passant palmed it away.

Leighton Hewitt did well to win it back in the right back position before running just past the halfway line and pinging an inch perfect ball into Goncalves who flicked it goalwards but Passant was there again to deny the forward.

Town then got their equaliser, as the ball dropped kindly to Liam Atkinson on the edge of the area who rifled it into the far corner through the gap in the defence to pull Town level superbly.

Town almost took the lead just before half time, as an inch perfect free kick delivery from Roberts sailed through everyone, with Atkinson and Trafford almost getting a toe on it.

After half time, Town came out even better.

Despite this, an early second half penalty shout for the visitors also went nowhere, as Eli Fisher seemed to be brought down as went shoulder to shoulder with Trafford.

Town then turned on style, as Goncalves somehow beat his man for pace, almost coming from miles behind to latch onto the loose ball but volleyed over.

Van Wyk also came close as his left footed effort from an angle was tipped wide by the legs of Passant.

However, from the resulting corner, Ben Trafford threw himself at a fantastic delivery from Roberts and floated it into the back of the net.

Town now deservedly led.

The game got a big scrappy from this point on, with the hosts pushing for an equaliser.

Both Lee Ashcroft and a Glossop defender were booked following a late challenge on Hewitt, sparking the first of many yellow cards.

Quite the turn of events moments later as Glossop manager Richard Brodie chucked himself on the pitch in an attempt to make things happen up front.

Trafford came close to a brace, as Passant brilliantly tipped over a powerful header from another corner.

With 20 minutes left to play, the hosts were convinced they'd scored, as Fisher poked it past Walker but the 'keeper managed to recover and claw it off the line, with many claiming it had got over.

Both Roberts and Atkinson were then booked for delaying the restart with 15 minutes left before it all boiled over.

Conal Gallagher, who was already on a booking, dragged Atkinson down as the forward looked to race in on goal.

He received a second booking and the hosts were down to ten.

The hosts then had to replace their goalkeeper, as Passant pulled up with an issue on a second occasion.

Town won a corner from the free kick.

The delivery was headed out to Hewitt whose effort flashed just wide of the far post.

Adbul Djalo was also booked for about a late a challenge as you can get on Ryan McLean.

Connor Newton then had to hobble off following a hamstring issue, he was replaced by Luke Smith, who produced a very short lived cameo.

He was straight into the action, flying threw Marcus Wood who was unhappy with the tackle, and got up to square up to the youngster.

Luke stood his ground and the two went head to head.

After breaking them apart, the referee sent them both off, with Town down to ten and GNE down to nine.

Town managed to keep the ball up the other end of the field until one fatal mistake let them down.

In the 95th minute, it was given away sloppily and Glossop broke.

A fierce effort allegedly struck the arm of Hewitt and the referee blew up.

Glossop took the free kick quickly, something Town were pulled up on on multiple occasions throughout the game but the referee was fine with their first attempt at doing so.

Fisher picked it up from the quick free kick and bent it in off the inside of the post, sparking wild celebrations from the hosts.

Town managed to get an attack going after this.

What could've been, as Lucas Wane saw an effort beaten away at the near post by substitute goalkeeper Gladwin.

Moments later the referee blew full time.

The hosts clearly the happier side with the point, but having gone down to nine men you can see why.

Saturday represented another missed chance to win, but it shows where the Ridge are now, compared to last season.

The boys go again on Saturday 19th October at home to FC Isle of Man, with the Ravens undoubtedly set to bring a good following.

Be a part of that crowd as we look to build on a good but frustrating away day in Derbyshire.

A reminder that if you bought a Bury ticket then you can gain free entry to that fixture.

A big thank you to those who travelled with us yesterday.
